Discover more about Mykonos Castle

Mykonos Castle, also known as Kastro, stands as a testament to the island's rich history. Constructed in the 13th century, the castle was strategically positioned on a hill to offer panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, providing protection against invaders. The Ghisi family, a noble Venetian family, controlled the island at the time and built the castle in 1207. Until the 17th century, the residents of Chora lived within the castle's fortified walls. The castle ruins may not offer much in the way of remaining structures, but the spot provides scenic views of the sea and the sunset. The area is filled with picturesque whitewashed alleys and sights worth visiting. One of the most iconic features of the Kastro area is the Panagia Paraportiani church, a complex of five churches built over centuries. Its unique asymmetrical shape and whitewashed walls make it one of the most photographed spots on the island. The name Paraportiani means "standing next to the entrance/door", as it was located next to the entrance of the ancient castle. While exploring the area, visitors can admire the remnants of historic buildings, narrow paths, and the remnants of old homes. The castle's location near Mykonos Town allows visitors to experience the lively atmosphere of local shops, cafes, and eateries.
