Discover more about Five Brothers

Perched on the northwest side of Acronafplia, the Five Brothers bastion stands as a testament to Nafplio's rich Venetian history. Constructed between 1389 and 1540, this fortification was strategically positioned to guard the entrance to the port, working in tandem with the Bourtzi castle. The bastion's name derives from the five identical cannons that were its primary defense. These cannons, crafted in Venice by John Francis Almercetti, date back to 1487. They are a reminder of the city's vital role as a maritime stronghold. During Venetian rule, a heavy chain was stretched from the Five Brothers to Bourtzi each night, effectively blocking the harbor entrance and giving Nafplio the name "Porto di Cadena".Today, the Five Brothers offers visitors a chance to step back in time and imagine the city's naval defenses. While some cannons bear the marks of modern graffiti, the site remains a pleasant spot for panoramic views of the gulf and the island castle of Bourtzi. It's a popular location for memorial photos and leisurely family walks.
