Temple of Zeus, Olympia Travel Guide

Dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, the Temple of Zeus in Olympia was the largest and most important building in Olympia. Constructed around 460 BCE, the temple was built by the architect Libon of Elis. The temple was made of local shell-limestone and covered with white stucco. Marble was used for the sculptures and roof tiles.The temple was designed in the Doric style, featuring six columns across the front and thirteen on the sides. Inside, the temple housed the renowned statue of Zeus, crafted by Phidias around 430 BC. This chryselephantine (gold and ivory) statue stood approximately 12 meters (43 feet) high and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue depicted Zeus enthroned, holding a scepter and a winged Victory.The temple's exterior was adorned with sculptures depicting scenes from Greek mythology. The east pediment showcased the chariot race between Pelops and Oenomaus, while the west pediment depicted the battle of the Lapiths and Centaurs. The twelve metopes above the entrance displayed the Labors of Hercules, the mythical son of Zeus.After the Olympic Games were abolished, the statue of Zeus was moved to Constantinople, where it was destroyed in a fire in 475 AD. Earthquakes in the 6th century AD caused the temple to collapse. Today, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus stand as a testament to the power and artistry of ancient Greece, attracting visitors from around the world.
