Ancient Cemetery of Parikia

The Ancient Cemetery of Parikia, located near the port on the coastal road, is one of the most significant archaeological sites on Paros. In use from the late 8th century BC to the 3rd century AD, this cemetery reveals centuries of Parian history and burial customs. Excavations, which began in 1983, have unearthed diverse tomb styles from various eras.Among the notable discoveries is the polyandreion, a unique mass grave dating back to the late Geometric period (8th century BC), the only one of its kind in the Aegean region. A massive headstone stands prominently in front of it. The cemetery also features marble sarcophagi from the post-Roman period, similar to those found in Thassos, a former Parian colony; these are now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Paros.Today, the Ancient Cemetery is an archaeological park where visitors can explore the well-preserved tombs and artifacts. An adjacent display center showcases finds and photographs from past excavations, providing context to the site's historical and archaeological significance. The cemetery offers a serene and educational experience, providing insights into the social and spiritual practices of ancient civilizations on Paros.
