Discover more about Sanctuary of Apollo

The Sanctuary of Apollo, also known as Delion, is perched atop a hill on the northern side of Parikia, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the island of Delos, Apollo's birthplace. Founded in the early 5th century BC, this sacred site was dedicated to the worship of Apollo Delius, the Greek god of light, healing, and the arts, and his sister Artemis. Visitors can explore the remains of the temples dedicated to Apollo and Artemis, as well as an ancient cemetery dating back to the Cycladic period. The sanctuary's strategic location allowed for communication across great distances using a network of signal fires, known as the 'fryktorias system'. Excavations reveal that the site has been used for cultic purposes since prehistoric times. The temple of Artemis was constructed to the east of the Apollo temple. The sanctuary features an enclosure with an altar, where religious ceremonies and rituals took place. A separate structure with marble benches and a portico may have served as a feasting room. The fragmented ruins suggest that the temple and statue suffered deliberate destruction. Exploring the Sanctuary of Apollo offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and connect with the ancient world.
