The chateau's strategic position, overlooking the Vrysses valley and the foothills of the White Mountains, highlights its historical importance as a defensive structure.Originally built during the Venetian period, the chateau was later modified and fortified by the Ottomans. Its most notorious owner was Ibrahim Alidakis, a Turkish Agha who ruled the area with an iron fist in the 18th century. Alidakis was known for his oppressive rule and amassed a vast fortune by seizing property from the local Greeks. In 1774, Sfakian rebels attacked the chateau, leading to Alidakis's death and the destruction of part of the complex.Today, visitors can explore the remains of this once-imposing fortress, including its stone walls and towers. Although partially ruined, the chateau still exudes a sense of its former grandeur and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Cretan countryside. The site provides a serene atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat and a connection with Crete's cultural heritage. The surrounding area, dotted with olive groves and traditional villages, enhances the experience of immersing oneself in the local way of life.Recent renovations have been carried out since 2016, including a paved access ramp and an arched entrance.
