The Venetian Clock Tower of Rethymno, despite its physical absence, holds a prominent place in the city's history. Constructed in the 16th century by the Venetians, it stood as one of the tallest structures in Rethymno, reaching a height of 20 meters. The tower was an integral part of the Venetian square, along with the Loggia and Rimondi Fountain. Its southern facade was adorned with coats of arms and the Lion of St. Mark, showcasing Venetian craftsmanship.During the Turkish occupation, the tower's significance diminished, and surrounding structures began to encroach upon it. In 1945, the Municipal Authority made the decision to demolish the Clock Tower to widen the road. Today, only a fragment of its doorway, embedded in a shop on Arkadiou Street, serves as a tangible link to its existence. While the tower is gone, the legacy of Venetian architecture and the echoes of its history continue to resonate in Rethymno.
