Mikrasiaton Square: Rethymno's Historic Heart

Mikrasiaton Square, located in the heart of Rethymno's Old Town, has been the city's largest square since 2007. Its name honors the inhabitants of Minor Asia (Mikrasiates) who sought refuge in Rethymno after the population exchange established by the Lausanne Convention. These refugees were accommodated in the square, marking a significant moment in the city's history.The square is surrounded by architectural jewels from the Venetian and Ottoman periods. These include the House of Culture, the Neratze Mosque (now a conservatory), the Church of Agios Fragkiskos (housing the Archaeological Museum's temporary exhibitions), and the Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno. A monument within the square commemorates the Asia Minor disaster, a tribute erected through the efforts of local Asia Minor associations.Today, Mikrasiaton Square serves as a dynamic meeting point for Rethymno's residents and visitors. Its spaciousness makes it a popular spot for families and youngsters, especially during the summer months.
