The Rethymno Ephorate of Antiquities, situated in a building on Arkadiou Street, is a regional branch of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. It was established through a merger of the 25th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and the 28th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. Its primary mission is to safeguard the rich cultural heritage of the Rethymno region. This includes archaeological sites dating back to the Minoan era, such as Eleftherna, Axos, and the Late Minoan Cemetery of Armeni. The Ephorate also manages Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments, ensuring their preservation for future generations. The Ephorate's responsibilities extend to archaeological research, excavation, conservation, and the organization of exhibitions to showcase the region's historical treasures. It collaborates with various institutions, including the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno and the University of Crete, to promote the understanding and appreciation of Crete's cultural legacy.
