The Panagia Eikonistria Church, also known as the Monastery of Panagia Eikonistria, is a significant religious site on the island of Skiathos. Located approximately 13 kilometers from Skiathos Town in a heavily wooded area, the monastery offers visitors a peaceful retreat and panoramic views. According to local tradition, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found around 1650 in the branches of a pine tree. A hermit monk named Symeon saw a mysterious light illuminating his hermitage from the forest and after prayer and fasting, he discovered the icon. The name 'Kounistra' is said to derive either from the way the icon was hanging and swinging on the tree ('kounietai' means to swing in Greek) or from the name of the area, 'Kounistres', due to the frequent swaying of the trees by the wind. The monastery was initially built in 1655 at the site where the icon was found. Due to pirate raids, the monastery was fortified with battlements. The church was renovated in 1726, becoming Stavropegic in 1806. After being dissolved during the Regency, it was fully restored in 1841 by the monk Dionysios. The church is a single-aisle basilica with a dome, featuring remarkable frescoes from 1741 and 1805 and a gilded, carved iconostasis. Today, the icon is housed in the Metropolitan Church of the Three Hierarchs. Panagia Eikonistria is the patron saint of Skiathos, celebrated with a grand feast on November 21st (the Entry of the Theotokos). The monastery holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, with many gathering the night before the feast, keeping vigil in the courtyard around lit fires.
