The Holy Monastery of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, also known as Evangelistria Monastery, is a peaceful retreat located in the heart of Skiathos. Founded in 1794 and completed in 1806, this active monastery provides a unique opportunity to explore its religious significance and rich history. The monastery was built on the site of an older, ruined monastery and became a stronghold of the "Kollyvades," a group of monks. Visitors can immerse themselves in the monastery's tranquil atmosphere, learn about its history through a small museum, and enjoy locally made products in the monastery shop. The museum showcases historical, religious, and ethnographic artifacts. The shop features locally sourced products such as homemade honey, wine, liqueurs, and olive oil. A new cafe near the monastery offers refreshments and food with sea views. The monastery's architecture is based on that of the monasteries of Mount Athos. The cathedral is a condensed form of the Athonite type with lateral spaces and three domes. The monastery also has a valuable library with rare publications and documents, an ecclesiastical museum, and an olive press exhibition. The monastery played a significant role in Greek history; the first Greek flag, a white cross on a blue background, was woven here, symbolizing the Greek Revolution for Independence. Visiting the monastery requires modest dress. Women should wear a headscarf, a dress covering the knees, and socks, while men should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Smoking is not allowed on the monastery grounds.
