The Ioannis Papafis Monument is located in Tsirogiannis Park, across from the White Tower in Thessaloniki. It commemorates Ioannis Papafis, a Greek businessman and philanthropist born in Thessaloniki who made significant contributions to the city.The monument consists of a marble bust of Papafis placed on a marble pedestal, with his name and life dates (1792-1886) inscribed. Behind the bust, a large marble plaque depicts young boys holding various tools, representing the trades taught at the Papafio Orphanage, which Papafis founded. The monument serves as a reminder of Papafis's enduring legacy as a protector of the disadvantaged and a benefactor of Thessaloniki.Papafis's philanthropy extended beyond Thessaloniki, as he also supported institutions in the young Greek state. He was a major shareholder in the National Bank of Greece and donated to the University of Athens and the Greek Orthodox Church. The Papafio Orphanage, originally named "The Maltese," provided shelter and vocational training for orphaned boys and continues to operate today as a Children's Care Center, keeping Papafis's legacy alive.
