Osman Shah Mosque: A Testament to Ottoman History in Trikala

The Osman Shah Mosque, also known as the Kursum Mosque (Lead Mosque), is a significant historical landmark in Trikala, Greece. Constructed in the 16th century during the Ottoman era, it was commissioned by Osman Shah, the nephew of Suleiman the Magnificent, and designed by the famed Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. It is the only mosque designed by Sinan in Greece.The mosque's name, Kursum, derives from the Turkish word for 'lead,' as its dome is covered with lead. The building consists of a square prayer hall topped by a large, semi-spherical dome measuring 18 meters in diameter. A minaret stands on the northwestern corner. The mosque complex once included a madrasah, an almshouse, and a caravanserai, but only the octagonal türbe (tomb) of Osman Shah remains, now used to store archaeological artifacts.According to local tradition, Osman Shah ordered the mosque's construction as a gesture of gratitude after being cured of a severe illness in Trikala. Today, the Osman Shah Mosque serves not only as a historical monument but also as a museum and venue for events and exhibitions.
