Sintrivani Square: A Historic Volos Landmark

Sintrivani Square, also known as Fountain Square, is a notable landmark in Volos, Greece, offering a glimpse into the city's layered history. Developed during the late Ottoman era as part of Volos' modernization, the square's centerpiece is its fountain, a gift from the Sultan, which stands as an example of late 19th-century urban design. During the Ottoman period, the square was called Siantirvan, Kalamarias Square, or Taksim Square, mirroring the name of a well-known square in Istanbul. Before the square's creation, the location was marked by a large plane tree that served as a site for public executions. Over time, Sintrivani Square has transformed from a place of somber events to a lively hub for social gatherings. After Volos' annexation by Greece, particularly during the interwar period, the square was larger and bustling with activity, hosting numerous cafes and taverns.
