The Κίτρινη Αποθήκη, or Yellow Warehouse, is a significant historical building located in the heart of Volos. Constructed in 1926 for the America Tobacco Company, it served as a major tobacco storage facility, reflecting the economic boom Volos experienced during the interwar period. The building occupies nearly half a city block at the intersection of Anthimou Gazi and Vassanis streets. The warehouse's architecture is characterized by its simple yet imposing design, featuring symmetrical windows framed by decorative plasterwork. Its bright yellow exterior, which gave the building its name, makes it a recognizable landmark in the city.During the German occupation in World War II, the Κίτρινη Αποθήκη was used as a prison, torture center, and execution site by the Nazis, imprinting a dark chapter in its history. Hundreds of Greek resistance fighters were imprisoned and suffered within its walls. In 1993, the Κίτρινη Αποθήκη was designated a protected historical monument, recognizing its importance as a sample of industrial architecture closely tied to the region's economic development and recent history. While there were plans to transform it into a center for innovation and entrepreneurship for the University of Thessaly, the project has faced setbacks and delays. As of 2023, the restoration work was halted due to financial issues, leaving the building exposed to the elements and in danger of further deterioration. Despite the current state of disrepair, the Κίτρινη Αποθήκη remains a powerful symbol of Volos's industrial heritage and a reminder of the sacrifices made during the German occupation.
