The Anafonitria Monastery, located in the northwest region of Zakynthos near the village of Anafonitria, offers a serene escape into the island's rich history and spiritual heritage. Founded in the 15th century during the Venetian occupation, the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and houses a miraculous icon believed to have arrived from Constantinople in 1453. The monastery's architecture is a blend of Byzantine and Venetian influences. A notable feature is the defensive tower, originally built for protection and now serving as a belfry. Inside the main church, a three-aisled basilica, visitors can admire frescoes dating back over 500 years and experience the lingering scent of incense, evoking a sense of the past. The Anafonitria Monastery is particularly significant as it was home to Agios Dionysios, the patron saint of Zakynthos, who lived here as a monk in the 16th century. Saint Dionysios is known as the 'Saint of Forgiveness' for sheltering his brother's murderer, adding to the monastery's spiritual importance. Although the monastery no longer houses monks, it is maintained by the local priest and villagers and serves as a parish church. Visitors can explore the beautiful stone buildings, wander through gardens filled with flowers, and visit a small gift shop.
