Discover more about Christ of the Deep

The Christ of the Deep is an iconic underwater statue located in the Molinere Bay off the coast of Grenada. Erected in 1961, the statue serves as a tribute to the local fishermen and divers who lost their lives at sea. The statue is a replica of the Christ of the Abyss statue in the Mediterranean Sea near Genoa, Italy. The statue was gifted to Grenada by the owners of the Bianca C, an Italian cruise ship that sank in Grenadian waters in 1961, in gratitude for the heroic rescue efforts of the Grenadian people. The bronze statue stands approximately 12 feet tall and is submerged about 15 feet below the surface. With arms outstretched upwards, the statue creates a serene and awe-inspiring sight for divers and snorkelers. Over time, the statue has become encrusted with coral and other marine life, further enhancing its beauty and creating a unique habitat for a variety of fish and other sea creatures. The Christ of the Deep is part of the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, the world's first underwater sculpture park, created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor in 2006. The park features a collection of ecological underwater contemporary art, designed to create an artificial reef and provide a habitat for marine life. Divers and snorkelers can explore the various sculptures, including the Christ of the Deep, and witness the beauty of the underwater world.
