Discover more about Christ of the Deep

The Christ of the Deep is a poignant underwater sculpture located in the Moliniere Bay off the coast of Grenada, about 2 miles north of St. George's. Erected in 1961, this iconic statue depicts Jesus Christ with arms outstretched upwards toward the surface, symbolizing peace and hope. The statue is a replica of the Christ of the Abyss, with the original located in the Mediterranean Sea near Genoa, Italy. This Grenadian Christ of the Deep was gifted to the island to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Bianca C, an Italian luxury cruise ship dubbed the "Titanic of the Caribbean". In 1961, the ship caught fire in St. George's harbor, and the local Grenadian people heroically rescued over 600 passengers and crew. The statue stands as a testament to the compassion and selflessness displayed by the Grenadian people during that tragic event. Submerged approximately 15 feet (4.5 meters) below the surface, the Christ of the Deep has become a popular site for diving and snorkeling. The statue and surrounding area have transformed into an artificial reef, teeming with vibrant marine life, enhancing the experience for visitors. Divers and snorkelers can witness the statue up close, surrounded by colorful fish and coral formations. The underwater sculpture park shifts the focus away from fragile reefs, to less sensitive concrete and steel structures. The serene ambiance and gentle sound of the waves create a peaceful environment, inviting visitors to appreciate the statue's message of hope and peace.
