Overview
Perched on Richmond Hill, Fort Matthew offers a captivating journey through Grenada's colonial history. Built by the French between 1784 and 1790 after they regained control of the island, it was named after then Governor Edward Matthew. This 1500-yard fortification played a crucial role in the struggles between the French and English for control of Grenada.Over the years, Fort Matthew has served various purposes. Besides its military function, it was also used as a mental institution in 1880. The fort's complex network of tunnels, army kitchens, and cell blocks remain largely intact, providing a tangible connection to the past. Though partially destroyed during the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983, the site still offers a wealth of historical insights and stunning views.Visitors can explore the well-preserved structures, wander through the tunnel network, and enjoy panoramic views of St. George's, including the Melville Street Cruise Port, St. George's University, and the Carenage. Informative plaques and guided tours are available to provide deeper insights into the fort's history and its impact on Grenada's development. Fort Matthew is open to the public and offers a unique blend of historical exploration and scenic beauty.
