Discover more about Lake Antoine

Lake Antoine, located six miles north of Grenville, is a captivating natural landmark on Grenada's northeastern coast. Formed roughly 14,000 years ago, the lake occupies the collapsed cone of an extinct volcano, creating a picturesque crater filled with water. This forms what is considered the island's finest example of a true tuffaceous ring—a circular crater encircled by consolidated volcanic ash. Covering 42 acres (17 hectares), Lake Antoine is larger than Grand Etang Lake. Although much of the original vegetation has been cleared for agriculture, the area remains a rich wetland ecosystem. The lake is a prime spot for birdwatchers, attracting species like herons, ruddy ducks, fulvous whistling ducks, snail kites, and gray kingbirds. While its depth was once recorded at 100 feet (30 meters) in 1939, siltation has reduced it to between 16 and 23 feet (5 and 7 meters). The lake is believed to be hydrologically connected to both Grand Etang Lake and St. George's Harbour, with past observations suggesting possible subterranean linkages. A narrow road leads to the lake, offering fine views of the perfectly shaped crater from atop a hill.
