Merizo Bell Tower: A Symbol of Guam's Past

The Merizo Bell Tower, also known as Kampanayun Malesso, is a prominent historical site in the village of Merizo, Guam. Built between 1914 and 1919 under the guidance of Father Cristobal de Canals, the tower served to improve the quality of life for the people of Merizo. Father Canals, who oversaw both Malesso' and Humåtak, also constructed the San Dimas church nearby, focusing on agricultural advancements, even creating a new strain of tomato.The tower's architecture reflects the transition from Spanish colonial design to more modern methods, showcasing a unique blend of styles. Constructed using 'manposteria,' a technique involving stone rubble mortared together, then plastered and whitewashed, adapted from Spanish construction. The bell was used to announce religious events, town meetings, and mass.Today, the Merizo Bell Tower stands as a testament to Guam's rich history and cultural heritage.
