Discover more about Agat Unit | Ga'an Point

Agat Unit | Ga'an Point, situated in the village of Agat, Guam, marks a significant site in the Pacific Theater of World War II. As part of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, Ga'an Point stands as a testament to the fierce Battle of Guam in July 1944. This coastal area served as the southern landing site for U.S. forces aiming to liberate the island from Japanese occupation. On July 21, 1944, U.S. troops stormed Hågat (Agat) Beach, with Ga'an Point as a key objective. The Japanese forces had heavily fortified the area, constructing pillboxes and concrete blockhouses into the natural coral outcroppings. These defenses housed various weaponry, including machine cannons and naval guns, designed to repel the impending invasion. The well-concealed pillboxes proved difficult for American forces to overcome, resulting in intense fighting and significant casualties. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of these fortifications, including well-preserved pillboxes and two relocated Japanese guns. A Japanese inscription can still be seen in the concrete blockhouse. The site offers a sobering look into the challenges faced by soldiers during the battle. Offshore, the remains of WWII-era vehicles, such as an Amtrac, lie submerged, serving as underwater memorials. Beyond its historical significance, Ga'an Point also offers a tranquil beach setting. Visitors can access Hågat Beach from the parking area via a paved path, passing by the historic guns and fortifications. The shallow, rocky beach provides opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, with seagrass beds and marine life to discover. A small picnic area is also available for those seeking relaxation amidst the historical surroundings. Ga'an Point provides a dual experience, blending historical exploration with natural beauty. It serves as a place for reflection on the sacrifices made during the Battle of Guam and an opportunity to appreciate the island's resilience and enduring spirit.
