Discover more about Cerrito Del Carmen

Cerrito Del Carmen is a significant historical and cultural landmark in Guatemala City. The site's history dates back to the late 16th century with the arrival of the Genoese hermit Juan Corz, who brought an image of the Virgen del Carmen. In 1620, he built a small church on the hill, which became the first Spanish building in the valley and the starting point for the construction of what is now Guatemala City. The church has been rebuilt several times due to earthquakes, most notably in 1917-18 and 1976. Today, the chapel is a national cultural heritage site and Marian sanctuary. While experts say the architectural style of the chapel is unique, it features Baroque elements common to the time, with a simple, fortress-like design. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, enjoy the playground, and appreciate the panoramic views. The park provides a tranquil setting to learn about the city's origins and enjoy a peaceful escape from the urban bustle.
