The Chichicastenango Regional Museum, also known as Museo Regional, is a modest but interesting museum located within the Iglesia de Santo Tomás, the main church in Chichicastenango. It provides a valuable insight into the history and culture of the Mayan-Quiche region. The museum's collection largely consists of artifacts donated by Idelfonso Rossbach, a German Franciscan priest who served the town from 1894 to 1944. The exhibits include ceramics, pottery, historical documents, and other significant regional findings. You'll find jade necklaces and figurines, ceremonial masks, obsidian spearheads, incense burners, and metates (grindstones for maize). Two of the three exhibition rooms display Mayan textiles and a manuscript of one of the first Spanish translations of the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya. The third room features a model of the town with explanations of key points in the Mayan-Quiche region's history. The museum emphasizes the connection between history and contemporary life, and it often hosts exhibitions featuring local artists. This allows visitors to experience the current cultural vibrancy of the area. Its location near the famous Chichicastenango market makes it easy to combine a museum visit with exploring one of Central America's largest and most colorful markets. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
