Discover more about Sitio Arqueológico Mixco Viejo

Sitio Arqueológico Mixco Viejo, also known as Jilotepeque Viejo, is a captivating archaeological site nestled in the department of Chimaltenango, Guatemala. This ancient city, located approximately 50 kilometers north of Guatemala City, was the capital of the Chajoma kingdom. Founded in the 12th century, the city was built on a mountain top for defensive purposes, surrounded by steep ravines. Originally named Saqik'ajol Nimakaqapek, Mixco Viejo was a formidable military stronghold. The city's strategic location provided its inhabitants with a natural advantage, making it difficult for invaders to penetrate. The site comprises 15 groups with at least 120 structures, including twin pyramids, ball courts, and a map in relief. In 1525, Pedro de Alvarado conquered and destroyed Mixco Viejo after a three-month siege. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins and imagine life in this ancient city. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and insights into the ingenuity of the Maya civilization. Archaeological investigations have revealed that Mixco Viejo dates back to the Late/Terminal Classic period (600-1100 A.D.). However, most of the structures visible today were built during the Postclassic period (1100-1525 A.D.). The site's pottery tradition is distinguished by white on red lines, a characteristic of the highland plateau region. Visiting Mixco Viejo is an enriching experience for history buffs and nature enthusiasts alike. The site's unique architecture, strategic location, and stunning views make it a must-see destination in Guatemala.
