Discover more about Convento Capuchinas

The Iglesia y Convento de las Capuchinas, consecrated in 1736, stands as one of Antigua's most visited historical sites. This convent provides a unique insight into the religious and political climate of its time. The Capuchin nuns from Madrid established the convent in 1731, with construction overseen by architect Diego de Porres and carried out by indigenous laborers. Notably, the Convento de las Capuchinas was the last women's convent established in Antigua. It aimed to provide a religious life for poverty-stricken women without requiring a dowry. The architecture features a blend of Spanish colonial and Moorish styles. The complex includes a church with intricate stonework, rooms, courtyards, and a museum displaying religious artifacts. One of the most distinctive features is the Torre de la Soledad, a circular tower containing eighteen individual nuns' cells built around a central patio. This design is considered the first apartment building in America. The convent was damaged during the earthquakes of 1751 and 1773 and was subsequently abandoned. The Clarissine Nuns relocated to Guatemala City to establish a new church. In 1814, the property was sold, and the grounds were repurposed for drying coffee beans and growing crops. Today, after meticulous renovations, visitors can explore the ruins and admire the fine cloister with its stout columns, high arched passageways, and well-tended gardens.
