Discover more about Tanque La Unión

Tanque La Unión, located on 6a Calle Oriente, is one of Antigua's most iconic landmarks. Constructed in 1853, it was originally known as Plaza de San José. The name was later changed to Tanque de la Unión in honor of the Federation of United Provinces of Central America. This historic site was commissioned to provide a communal space for local women to wash clothes and socialize. With its 22 washbasins, it became a central meeting point for the community. The structure features a large, rectangular water tank with stone basins, set against the backdrop of Antigua's colonial streets and volcanoes. The architectural style reflects the Spanish-indigenous design fusion of the era. Although the tank no longer functions as a laundry, it remains a beloved historical site where locals and tourists gather to relax and take photographs. The earthquake of 1976 caused severe damage to Tanque La Unión, but it was restored in 1979, preserving its original neoclassical style. Today, the surrounding park offers benches, green areas, and a tranquil atmosphere. It's a place where history, culture, and tradition converge, offering a glimpse into daily life in colonial Guatemala.
