Discover more about Takalik Abaj Archaeological Park

Takalik Abaj, also known as Abaj Takalik, is a captivating pre-Columbian archaeological site located in the Retalhuleu Department of Guatemala. Its ancient name may have been Kooja. This site is exceptional because it showcases a unique fusion of Olmec and Maya cultural features. Takalik Abaj flourished from the 9th century BC to at least the 10th century AD, serving as a vital center for commerce and trade with other significant sites like Kaminaljuyu and Chocolá. Takalik Abaj is situated on the Pacific coastal plain and is recognized as one of the largest sites in the region with sculptured monuments. The site boasts an impressive collection of Olmec-style sculptures, including potential colossal heads and petroglyphs. It features a sophisticated water drainage system and a wealth of sculptured monuments. The architecture was influenced gradually by the Olmecs, while still preserving typical Mayan features. As you explore the grounds, you'll discover temple mounds, ball courts, and stepped paths paved with rounded river stones. The stone sculptures are particularly noteworthy, with representations of animals and aquatic creatures, miniature versions of Olmec colossal heads, and early Maya monuments depicting religious ceremonies. The site is divided into four main groups—Central, North, West, and South—spread across nine terraces. The Central Group appears to have been the center of the site.
