Parque Xela is centrally located and easily accessible on foot from most locations in Quetzaltenango's city center. From the Minerva Terminal, walk east along 12 Avenida towards the city center. Continue onto 4a Calle, and you'll find the park on your left. No costs are involved.

Public Transport

Local buses (urbanos) circulate throughout Quetzaltenango. Look for buses displaying 'Parque Central' or 'Centro' on their windshields. These will drop you off within a few blocks of the park. Bus fares are typically Q1-Q3. From the bus stop, follow the signs or ask locals for directions to Parque Xela.

Parque Xela, officially called Parque Centro América, is more than just a city park; it's the heart and soul of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Originally designed as two separate parks by Italian architect Alberto Porta in the 19th century, they were merged in the 1930s to create the oblong plaza visitors enjoy today.The park is a lively hub where locals and tourists alike gather to stroll along well-manicured walkways, sit and chat, or simply observe the rhythm of daily life. The park's monuments tell stories of Quetzaltenango's past. A rotunda with Ionic columns honors Rafael Álvarez Ovalle, composer of the Guatemalan national anthem. In the center stands a pillar dedicated to Justo Rufino Barrios, a 19th-century president whose reforms shifted land ownership from Maya peasants to coffee plantation owners.Flanking the park are significant architectural landmarks. The Municipalidad, rebuilt after the 1902 earthquake, showcases neoclassical grandeur. The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo, with its ornately carved facade, marks the site of a church dating back to 1532. The Museo de Historia Natural offers a glimpse into the region's natural history. Parque Xela provides a captivating introduction to Guatemala's second-largest city.
