Discover more about Catedral del Espíritu Santo

The Catedral del Espíritu Santo, also known as Quetzaltenango Cathedral, is a Catholic church with historical and cultural importance for Quetzaltenango. The cathedral was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in 1532, shortly after they conquered the city of Xelajú-Noj and defeated the legendary indigenous prince, Tecún Umán. The city was then dedicated by the Spanish to the Holy Spirit. Over the centuries, the cathedral has suffered damage from earthquakes, including significant events in 1765 and 1853, which led to several structural changes. While the original church was demolished, the facade was preserved, representing a blend of colonial and modern architectural elements. Today, the cathedral features a neoclassical style with hints of a paleochristian design, marked by exposed stonework. Inside the cathedral, visitors can find the revered images of The Divine Just Judge and the Virgin of the Rosary, the patron saint of Quetzaltenango. These images are central to religious processions during Good Friday and the October festivities, respectively. The interior is adorned with stained glass windows that cast colorful patterns across the stone floors, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
