Reserva Chelemhá: A Cloud Forest Sanctuary

Reserva Chelemhá, a private natural reserve, is a biological haven protecting species and cloud forests in the municipality of San Pedro Carchá, Alta Verapaz. Located in the Sierra Yalijux, it safeguards approximately 172 hectares (400 acres) of primary cloud forest. This reserve is a crucial habitat for the Resplendent Quetzal, Guatemala's national bird, and various other endemic highland species. Founded by Armin Schumacher, a Swiss native, and his wife Elvira Xo Cac, the reserve showcases a deep commitment to conservation. The lush environment hosts diverse flora, including mosses, ferns, and orchids, thriving in the canopy. Visitors can spot iconic regional fauna such as pumas, jaguars, howler monkeys, and various resident and migratory birds. The reserve also promotes scientific activities and has partnered with PROEVAL RAXMU for bird monitoring and local guide training. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails, enjoy birdwatching from designated observatories, and immerse themselves in the serene cloud forest. The Maya Cloud Forest Lodge offers lodging, rest areas, and a restaurant serving organic food from the reserve. The lodge's design incorporates wood salvaged from fallen trees, reflecting a minimalist, arts-and-crafts aesthetic.
