Discover more about Victoria Tower

Victoria Tower, standing 100 feet tall, is a monument in St Peter Port, Guernsey, built to honor Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's visit in 1846. This was the first time a reigning monarch had ever set foot on the island, making it a momentous occasion. The tower was designed by architect William Colling, who drew inspiration from medieval Italian buildings to convey prominence and majesty. Construction began in 1848, with the Governor of Guernsey laying the foundation stone and a time capsule containing Guernsey coins being placed within the base. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert returned in 1859 to inspect the completed tower. The tower is largely built from red granite from the Guet Quarry at Cobo. Its design incorporates different types of stonework and architectural features intended to represent the Queen, her empire, and her achievements. Visitors can ascend the tower via a narrow, spiral staircase of 99 steps to reach the viewing platform. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of St Peter Port and the island's west, north, and east coasts. The tower is set within peaceful gardens, featuring two German 13.5cm K 09 guns that were buried during World War II to mislead invading forces. These guns were excavated in 1978 and are now on display. Note that access to the tower is via a key that must be obtained from the Guernsey Museum at Candie Gardens. After your visit, the key must be returned to the museum.
