Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest town along the Berbice River, such as New Amsterdam. Head west on the main road towards the town of Bartica. Continue on the Bartica road until you reach the junction near the town of Linden. Take the turn onto the Linden to Lethem road (also known as the Linden-Soesdyke Highway). Follow this road for about 180 kilometers until you reach the sign for Iwokrama Forest. Turn onto the access road leading to the forest. Note: Ensure your vehicle is suitable for rough terrain as the last stretch may be unpaved.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start at New Amsterdam and take a bus to Bartica. The fare is typically around GYD 1,500. From Bartica, you will need to catch a minibus heading towards Linden. Once you reach Linden, transfer to a bus that goes along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway towards Lethem. Inform the driver of your destination, Iwokrama Forest, so they can drop you off at the correct access road. Be prepared for a longer journey as the total travel time could exceed 5-6 hours. Ensure you have cash for bus fares, and confirm the schedule as services may vary.
Boat
Alternatively, if you wish to experience the river, consider taking a boat from Bartica. Arrange a private boat or join a group tour that will take you along the Essequibo River towards the Iwokrama Forest area. This method may be more expensive, typically costing around GYD 10,000 to GYD 15,000 per person depending on the service and group size. The boat trip offers a unique view of the landscape, but be advised to check for availability and weather conditions beforehand.
