Car
If you are traveling by car, make your way to Route 1 (the Ring Road). From the Highlands, you can access Route 1 via the various mountain roads depending on your starting point. Once on Route 1, head east towards Skaftafell. After about 30 km from the town of Höfn, take the exit towards Skaftafell and follow the signs for about 15 km. You will arrive at the Skaftafell Visitor Center where you can park your vehicle. There is a parking fee of around 1,000 ISK per day.
Public Transportation
For those opting for public transportation, check the bus schedules from major towns like Reykjavik or Höfn. Companies such as Strætó operate buses to the Skaftafell area. You will need to take a bus to the Skaftafell stop, which is located on Route 1. The journey can take several hours depending on your starting location, and prices vary, so expect to pay between 5,000 to 10,000 ISK for a one-way trip. Make sure to book your tickets in advance during peak tourist seasons.
Hiking
If you are already in the Highlands and enjoy hiking, consider taking one of the hiking trails that lead to Skaftafell. For example, the Fimmvörðuháls trail is a popular option that connects the area near Skógafoss to Skaftafell. This multi-day trek requires proper planning, gear, and a reasonable level of fitness. Make sure to consult local maps and trail information before embarking. Additionally, it's advisable to inform someone about your hiking plans for safety.
Use Skaftafell as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
