From Hveragerdi, start by heading northwest on Road 1 (Þjóðvegur) towards Reykjavík. Continue for approximately 30 km. Look for the exit towards Árbær (exit 4). Merge onto Kistuhylur and follow signs for the Árbær Open Air Museum, which will be located on your right at Kistuhylur 110, 110 Reykjavík. Parking is available at the museum.

To reach the Árbær Open Air Museum from Hveragerdi using public transport, take the Strætó bus number 51 from Hveragerdi towards Reykjavík. It usually departs from the main bus stop in Hveragerdi. Ride the bus until you reach the stop at Árbær (Kistuhylur). The museum will be a short walk from the bus stop at Kistuhylur 110, 110 Reykjavík.
