The Cattle Bank, located at 102 E. University Avenue in Champaign, Illinois, is a significant landmark that whispers tales of the city's formative years. Constructed in 1858, it stands as the oldest documented commercial structure in Champaign. The building's history is deeply intertwined with the rise of Champaign as a vital agricultural hub in the mid-19th century.Champaign's strategic location as the southern terminus of a railroad line to Chicago transformed the region's cattle industry. Farmers from the surrounding prairies drove their herds to Champaign to be shipped to the bustling Chicago market. Recognizing this economic opportunity, the Grand Prairie Bank of Urbana established a branch in Champaign, later to be known as the Cattle Bank, providing essential banking and loan services to these cattlemen. While the Cattle Bank served its original purpose for only three years before dissolving due to an economic crisis, its legacy endured. The building transitioned through various commercial tenants, including a mineral water manufacturer, drug store, and grocery store, before a fire in 1971 threatened its existence. Saved by local preservationists and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the Cattle Bank was renovated and found new life.Since 2001, the Cattle Bank has been home to the Champaign County History Museum. Though the museum's display space is limited, it offers engaging exhibits that showcase the rich history of Champaign County, from its early settlement to its development as a thriving community. Visitors can explore artifacts and displays that illustrate the economic, social, and cultural changes that have shaped the region.
