Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving, make your way to Apple River Canyon State Park located at 8763 E Canyon Rd, Apple River, IL 61001. From any location in the Driftless Area, use local highways to get to IL-20 or IL-78. If you're coming from Galena, take US-20 E for approximately 30 miles, then turn onto IL-78 N. Follow IL-78 N until you reach the intersection with E Canyon Rd, then turn right. Continue for about 2 miles to arrive at the park entrance. There is no entry fee for the park, but parking is available.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in this rural area. If you're relying on public transportation, you may need to take a bus to a nearby town such as Elizabeth or Galena. From there, consider using a rideshare service or a taxi to reach Apple River Canyon State Park. It's about a 20-minute drive from Elizabeth and a 30-minute drive from Galena. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance, as they may not run frequently.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous, biking is an option if you're staying nearby. The park is accessible via backroads from towns like Apple River and Elizabeth. Be prepared for some hilly terrain and ensure your bike is in good condition. Follow E Canyon Rd directly to the park, which is approximately 5 miles from Apple River.   If you're already near the park, walking or hiking can be a great way to reach it. There are several trails leading into the park from surrounding areas.
