    Discover more about Cahokia Courthouse

The Cahokia Courthouse, located in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, offers a captivating glimpse into the state's territorial era. Constructed around 1740 as a French residence, the building showcases the poteaux-sur-solle (post-on-sill) construction technique, a hallmark of French Colonial architecture. In 1793, it was transformed into a courthouse, becoming the oldest in Illinois and a significant hub for political and legal affairs in the Northwest Territory from 1787 to 1818.Notably, from December 1803 to the spring of 1804, the courthouse served as a headquarters for Lewis and Clark as they prepared for their expedition. They gathered supplies, met with territorial leaders, collected information, and corresponded with President Thomas Jefferson, solidifying the site's place in American history. The courthouse has a double-pitch roof made of cedar shingles and galleries on all four sides. Inside, visitors can explore three exhibit rooms that depict cases from around 1800 and highlight the building's French roots. Another room has been refurbished to represent the courtroom as it appeared in the 1790s. The interior also features two limestone fireplaces and shuttered casement windows. The building has been moved twice in the early 20th century, first to St. Louis for the 1904 World's Fair and then to Chicago's Jackson Park in 1906. It was then reconstructed on its original site in 1939. Today, the Cahokia Courthouse is part of the Colonial Cahokia State Historic Sites complex, offering guided tours and special events like the Fete du Bon Vieux Temps and the Old Time Music Fete.
