    From downtown Galena, including Main Street, the U.S. Grant Home is a walk of approximately 15 minutes. Head east on Bouthillier Street, crossing the Galena River. Continue up the hill; the U.S. Grant Home will be on your left. There are sidewalks along the route.

    From downtown Galena, follow Bouthillier Street east. The U.S. Grant Home will be on the left-hand side. Three parking lots are available on site, with accessible parking spaces in each lot. Parking is free.

The U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site in Galena, Illinois, offers a unique window into the life of Ulysses S. Grant, the celebrated Civil War general and 18th President of the United States. In 1865, the citizens of Galena presented Grant with this handsome Italianate-style home as a token of their appreciation for his service. The house, originally built in 1859-1860, is furnished to represent a mid-1860s appearance, with many original items belonging to the Grant family. Visitors can take a guided tour of the two-story brick structure, exploring the entry hall, parlor, dining room, library, kitchen, and bedrooms. Interpreters in period costumes guide visitors through the home, sharing stories of Grant's life and accomplishments. The tour emphasizes Grant's role as a victorious war leader, his 1868 presidential campaign, and his time as president. The site also includes a visitor center with exhibits about Grant's life and the history of the home. In addition, visitors can explore the surrounding Grant State Park, which features picnic tables and the Long House, a log building representing a typical settler's home from the mid-19th century. The U.S. Grant Home was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
