This mixed-use project, housed in the historic former Sears building (originally the Henrietta Department Store), combines the rehabilitation of a landmark structure with a modern addition.Built in 1908, the main building initially housed Swan's Department Store for 30 years before becoming a Sears, Roebuck & Company store. After Sears closed, Elgin Community College briefly occupied the space before its transformation into the Artspace Lofts, which opened in 2012. The $15.2 million project created 55 units of affordable housing and 5,874 square feet of retail and community space for arts-friendly businesses and non-profit organizations.The Artspace Lofts not only provide affordable housing but also cultivate a creative community. The building features a ground-floor art gallery, the Robin and Mark Seigle Gallery, showcasing the works of resident artists and hosting various exhibitions and events.
