Elgin Public Museum: A Natural History Gem

The Elgin Public Museum of Natural History and Anthropology, located in Elgin, Illinois, is a treasure trove of natural and cultural artifacts. Housed in a beautiful Greek Revival building in the 108-acre Lords Park, the museum has been captivating visitors since 1920.Founded by Elgin philanthropists George and Mary Lord, the museum's collection was initially displayed in the Lords Park Pavilion. The Lords later commissioned architect David E. Postle to design a dedicated museum building, which began construction in 1907. Although the original plans called for three wings, only the west wing and central hall were completed at the time. The east wing was added later in 1998.Inside, visitors can explore exhibits featuring Mazon Creek fossils, Native American lifeways, Ice Age mammals, and the Fox River ecosystem. The museum also showcases the La Salle Expeditions, endangered species, and a variety of rocks, minerals, and wildlife specimens native to the Fox River Valley. A Discovery Room provides an interactive space for children to engage with natural history objects. Past exhibits have included a display on the extinct passenger pigeon, featuring an actual specimen.The Elgin Public Museum offers educational programs for all ages, including classes for adults and children, as well as programs for schools and scouting groups.
