The Wing Mansion, located at 972 W Highland Ave in Elgin, Illinois, is a testament to the opulence and architectural styles of the late 19th century. Constructed in 1891 for William and Abby Wing, the mansion is a prime example of Eastlake-Queen Anne architecture, designed by notable architect Smith Hoag. The Wings were significant contributors to Elgin's development, with William being a lawyer, city attorney, treasurer of the Illinois Northern Hospital for the Insane, and a bank director, while Abby was a well-known educator. The mansion boasts intricate woodwork, grand staircases, and beautifully crafted stained-glass windows, reflecting the artistry of the Gilded Age. Originally, the house featured a 1 1/2-story viewing tower, which was removed after a fire in 1897 that tragically took Abby Wing's life. William Wing rebuilt the third floor, but the viewing tower was never replaced. The 1.4-acre grounds include a two-story garage that once served as a carriage house and stable. The Wing Mansion stands as a local historic landmark, designated in April 2017. The home remained in the Wing family for many years and has only had a few owners. Today, the mansion is admired for its architectural splendor and rich history, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.
