U-46 Planetarium: Elgin's Gateway to the Stars

The U-46 Planetarium, located in Elgin, Illinois, has been a beacon of astronomical education since its opening in September 1963. As an addition to the historic Elgin National Watch Company Observatory, a building on the National Register of Historic Places, the planetarium holds a unique place in the city's history. The Elgin National Watch Company donated its observatory to the Elgin U-46 School District in 1959, and the planetarium was added in 1963. This made it the first school system in Illinois to have its own planetarium.Over the decades, the U-46 Planetarium has captivated over a million students with the wonders of the night sky. The planetarium primarily serves as a classroom for U-46 students, providing standards-aligned lessons in science and astronomy. Public sky shows are occasionally held, offering the wider community a chance to explore the cosmos. These shows typically include a tour of the current night sky and delve into specific astronomical topics with lectures, imagery, and full-dome video presentations.The planetarium features a Spitz A3P star projector, which has been meticulously maintained and continues to provide a pristine simulation of the night sky. The observatory dome, which houses a transit telescope, is accessible via stairs. The main planetarium chamber and restroom are wheelchair accessible.
