Discover more about Graue Mill & Museum

Nestled within the Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook, Illinois, the Graue Mill & Museum stands as a living testament to 19th-century life. This historic site, originally erected in 1852 by German immigrant Frederick Graue, served as a vital gristmill for local farmers, grinding wheat, corn, and other grains. The mill's construction utilized local materials, with limestone quarried from Lemont and bricks made from clay sourced from the Graue farm. White oak timbers cut along the Illinois & Michigan Canal provided the flooring, beams, and posts. The only exceptions were the four one-ton buhrstones imported from France for grinding.Beyond its economic role, Graue Mill also played a significant part in the Underground Railroad, offering refuge to fugitive slaves on their journey to freedom. Frederick Graue was a dedicated abolitionist, and the mill became one of three documented Underground Railroad stations in Illinois. After being operated by three generations of the Graue family for 70 years, the mill eventually became obsolete due to modern milling technology. However, it was restored and opened to the public as a working historic site in 1951. Today, visitors can witness milling, spinning, and weaving demonstrations, exploring life in the 1850s and 1860s. The museum also features a collection of Native American artifacts and items from the settlement era.The Graue Mill & Museum is more than just a historical landmark; it's an immersive experience that brings the past to life. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as an Illinois Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.
