Discover more about Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve

Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve, located a few miles south of Galena, Illinois, is an 85-acre sanctuary where history and nature converge. Managed by the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation, the reserve features commanding views of the Mississippi River and its backwater sloughs. It's an archaeologically significant site, home to the Aiken Mound Group, remnants of the Effigy Mound culture that thrived between A.D. 700 and 1000. In 1900, William Baker Nickerson, an amateur archaeologist, documented 51 mounds here, including a Thunderbird effigy, the only intact one of its kind in Illinois. Visitors can explore 2.25 miles of trails, observing 21 of the mounds. The reserve also protects diverse wildlife habitats, including oak savanna, upland forest, and prairie. Birdwatchers can spot red-headed woodpeckers, barn owls, bald eagles, and migrating American white pelicans. The land's preservation is thanks to landowners Dave and Pat Casper, who partnered with the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation in 2008 to protect the site from development. Today, Casper Bluff is open to the public from dawn to dusk, offering a peaceful retreat with historical depth and natural beauty.
