Car
From any location in Illinois Ozarks, head towards Alto Pass, IL. Use GPS navigation or a map application and enter 'Alto Pass, IL 62905' as your destination. If you’re coming from Carbondale, take IL-51 N for about 12 miles, then turn left onto IL-146 W. Follow IL-146 W for about 5 miles until you reach Alto Pass. Once in Alto Pass, look for signs indicating the Bald Knob Wilderness area which is located off of Bald Knob Road. The entrance to the wilderness area is approximately a mile from the main road.

If you're traveling by public transportation, your best option is to take a bus to Carbondale. From Carbondale, you would need to use a rideshare service (like Uber or Lyft) or a taxi to reach Alto Pass, as public transport options may be limited. Once you arrive in Alto Pass, follow the same directions as above to reach Bald Knob Wilderness. Be aware that rideshare or taxi fares will vary, so be prepared for potential costs.

If you are already in Alto Pass, you can walk to Bald Knob Wilderness. From the center of Alto Pass, head north on Bald Knob Road. The wilderness entrance is approximately 1 mile from the town center. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water, as the terrain can be rugged.
