Crab Orchard Campground, located within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge near Carbondale, Illinois, provides a diverse range of camping experiences within a stunning natural setting. The campground provides amenities such as showers and restrooms, enhancing the camping experience. The campground is open from April 1st to mid-November. The area has a rich history, having been used as farmland in the 1920s and 1930s before becoming a wildlife refuge. During World War II, it served as an ordnance plant. Driving
From Carbondale, Illinois, head east on IL-13. Continue on IL-13 until you reach the exit for Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. Follow the signs for the campground. Note that a vehicle entrance pass is required to enter the refuge; a day pass costs $2, a 7-day pass is $5, and an annual pass is $15. These can be purchased at the Visitor Center, Bluegill Bay Marina, or Crab Orchard Campground.
