The Hononegah grave, located in Rockton, Illinois, is the burial site of Hononegah Mack (1814-1847), a woman of mixed Winnebago and Potawatomi heritage who was married to Stephen Mack Jr., one of the first European settlers in Winnebago County. Hononegah's early life is somewhat shrouded in mystery, with some accounts claiming she was the daughter of a chief (making her a Native American princess), while others suggest she was an orphan raised by her uncles. Modern scholarship indicates she was at least three-quarters Winnebago and an orphan. Her Winnebago name, 'Hinu,' meant eldest daughter, and 'niga' meant water.Regardless of her origins, Hononegah's life was marked by both adventure and heartbreak. She met Stephen Mack Jr. when she was 15 years old and nursed him back to health. They married in 1829 and helped establish Macktown, the first permanent settlement in Winnebago County. Hononegah was known for her healing abilities, using local herbs and plants to aid those in need. She successfully navigated two cultures while raising nine children.Hononegah died at the young age of 33 from liver complications. Her legacy lives on in the Rockton area, with the Hononegah Community High School and Hononegah Forest Preserve named in her honor. The grave site provides a place for reflection on the life of a woman who was highly regarded in her community, with some calling her "the best woman in Winnebago County".
