The Old Stone Bridge: A Historic Landmark

The Old Stone Bridge, officially known as the Chicago & North Western Railway Stone Arch Bridge, is a captivating historical landmark located near Roscoe, Illinois. Constructed in 1882, this double-arch bridge replaced an earlier wooden structure and served as a vital part of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, which later became the Chicago & North Western Railway. The bridge facilitated the transport of materials to rebuild Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871 and supported the local sand quarrying industry.Designed by C&NW Chief Engineer Van Mienen, the bridge is made of dolomitic limestone and features a double-arch design. It stretches 53 feet long, 60 feet wide, and 58 feet high. In 1993, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.Today, the Old Stone Bridge is a highlight of the Stone Bridge Trail, a 5.8-mile crushed limestone path built along the former railway.
