Constructed between 1925 and 1927, the building stands 523 feet (159 meters) tall and was designed by Joachim Giæver and Frederick P. Dinkelberg. Originally known as the Jewelers Building, it earned its name because it housed many jewelers and diamond merchants. A unique feature was its car elevators, which allowed tenants to securely transport their valuable merchandise directly to their offices on the lower 22 floors. The building's exterior is clad in decorative terra cotta, showcasing a classical design inspired by the City Beautiful movement. The building has also been known as the Pure Oil Building and the North American Life Insurance Building, reflecting its diverse tenancy over the years. The French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago is currently a tenant. The building's dome once housed a restaurant called the Stratosphere Club. 35 East Wacker was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property to the Michigan-Wacker Historic District in 1978 and was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1994.
